VT Hash Check adds a Windows Explorer context menu item to compute the MD5 or SHA1 hash checksum of any file and to then send that checksum to
for checking against their Virus database. Results may optionally be saved in plain text, CSV, or JSON. VT Hash Check comes with TrID built-in for identifying unknown files.

VT Hash Check can be used in other ways as well. A user on Wilder's Security Forum

(http://anonymz.com/?http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=333350 ) suggested combining VT Hash Check with DownloadStatusBar for Firefox, for example.

"This is a better option than HMP. 40 different opinions, and the box pops up quickly. For those that didn't read the other thread: For Firefox users, get the add-on "Download Statusbar", and in the AV tab add the executable for VT Hash Check. If you're certain you already have a clean box, put your real-time AV away and enjoy a massive malware database with no footprint for any future incoming files.
VT Uploader is a good option too, but Hash Check is about twice as fast."

VT Hash Check expects a file path as a command line argument, so anything that can give it one can trigger VT Hash Check.
